Giving websites your personal information?

I am always cautious when it comes to giving websites my personal information. If they are a trusted company and I know they are then I am willing to put my personal details in but for things such as blogs, forums and even in some cases, websites unless I have used them in the past and know they are 100% safe I will never put any personal details in and keep it to a bare minimum.

I just accept that it is a thing that will happen and the odds of our government or legal system fixing it are about zero. Granted, I will admit that I also understand most of the modern web (Social Media, Video, Live Streaming, even Gaming) would be much less developed or even missing if they had to use a paid service model vs a shady data sale model.

I am always wary about what info I am giving websites, like I am not signing up for a forum that requires my SSN or tax information any day soon, but most of my basic stuff is probably already public or for sale somewhere.
